FIBA Africa Zone V: Where did it all go wrong for UCU Lady Canons

UCU Lady Canons have begun a post-mortem into their failure to lift the Zone V Championshionship trophy

UCU lady Canons' fate was sealed after losing  two games at the 2016 FIBA Africa Zone V Championship early this month in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

After beating Kenya's giants the KPA 60-64 in their third game, it was safe to assume that the lady Canons would be lifting the 2016 Zone V Clubs' championship title in the women's category only for tables to turn in their last two games of the tournament.

UCU's team captain Vilma Acheing told New Vision that the long journey to Dar-es-salaam left them fatigued and that affected their performance at the championships.

"Our bench was not as strong in the last games especially for the dependable players who were fatigued as a result of the long journey we had to Tanzania and yet the games were back to back so we couldn't push as it was required," Ancheing said

Unlike most Ugandan teams that went for the tournament by flight, the UCU teams embarked on the journey to Dar-es-salaam by road.
          
"We also got excited after beating KPA which made us relaxed so the next teams got us off guard,"  She added.

Like in 2014 in Mombasa, the  Lady Canons finished in fourth position and this year's Zone V games didn't change much.

UCU's Zainah Lokwameri and Sarah Ageno were some of the players who were in top form during the tournament.

Meanwhile in the Men's cartegory the City Oilers claimed the 2016 FIBA Africa Zone V Championship after beating the Ulinzi of  Kenyan 72-49 in the finals.
