Czech delegation visits Uganda

A Czech team led by their Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivan Jancarek, has held talks with  top officials of the Ministry of Defence and senior military officers of UPDF.

During the meeting at the Ministry headquarters in Mbuya, a city suburb, the Minister of State for Defence, Col. Charles Engola Okello, thanked the Government of Czech Republic for their continued warm relationship with the Republic of Uganda and specifically highlighted the current cooperation in defence between the two countries.

"We recognize the significance of the cooperation in defence between the two countries, specifically in the areas  of specialized training in various military capacities that can further strengthen and modernise our Army."

According to a release from the ministry, on invitation from the Czech team, Engola  said  that Uganda will send a representative to attend the forthcoming Future Forces Forum (FFF) in Prague as a great sign and indication of concern over the new world developments among the armed forces, defense and security.

"The FFF has come at the right time when the world is struggling to contain global terrorist groups."  Engola said, adding that Uganda is at the forefront on the fight against terrorism ideologies and she has paid heavily in her endurance in pacifying Somalia.

In brief remarks, Jancarek said the two countries had very similar views on African liberation and support for liberation movements. He also added that the Czech Republic has potential in cooperation with Uganda in areas of exports and imports of defence and security equipments and on Research and Development. Other areas he mentioned include upgrades and modernisation projects, Integrated and management projects and Logistics support.

The Minister further said his country would be able to support Uganda on key services, including provision of educational scholarships to Ugandan Nationals.

The Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Charles Angina recognized the contribution of Czech Republic in the professionalization of the UPDF and encouraged the guests to also explore the tourism sector in Uganda.

"Suffice to say, Uganda is also very open to you in the areas of Tourism. Uganda is much endowed with nature and you will get more at less cost than you can elsewhere. Please come back at another time and see what we can offer." Lt Gen Angina said.

The meeting was attended by the MOD/VA Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Byengoma Rosette, the Commander Land Forces, Maj Gen David Muhoozi and Commander Airforces, Maj Gen Sam Turyagenda, the Joint Chief of Staff, Maj Wilson Mbadi, the Chief of personnel and Administration Brig Joseph Musanyufu among others.
