Kayihura’s visit to the northern Ugandan district comes three days after the latest fatality.

KITGUM - The Inspector General of Police has apologized to the people of Kitgum for the increasing cases of gun-related crimes in the district.

General Kale Kayihura flew to Kitgum Thursday following a rise in gun- related murders in the area.

Tony Olanya, a retired accountant who worked with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), was shot dead at his home in Ayul B Village in Pager Division in Kitgum Municipality.

Kayihura said he was not aware of the magnitude of the gun crimes in Kitgum and vowed that the police would do whatever it takes to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

Three people have been murdered in recent months in the area.

Grace Ageno, the Woman Councilor for Greenland Parish in Pager Division, and 56-year-old Christine Omoya, wife of Reverend Canon Lamtoo Omoya, were hacked to death by unknown people armed with guns and machetes.

Meawhile, there is public outrage in the district, with locals and their leaders accusing the police of incompetence.
