Uganda women will play in the second tier of this year's Dubai 7s rugby tournament due December 1-3 in the United Arab Emirates.

The Uganda Women Rugby Association (UWRA) secretary Helen Buteme confirmed the development.

"We got invited for the tournament and we are taking a team. It will not be a national team but we are selecting a mixture of both experienced and young players on merit" Buteme said.

"We are going to play in the second tier of the tournament but it is good for us to get exposure and build relationships through networking for the better of women rugby in Uganda," she added.

Uganda last featured in 2009 when they qualified for the Rugby World Cup 7s tournament in the same country.

Buteme explained that team has started training once a week every Sunday and have targets in terms of fitness, conditioning, speed and rugby skills that they are supposed to reach by the end of this month.

URU executive member Annekatrin Els said that at the moment they are also fundraising for the team to be able to honour that opportunity.

"We appeal to the public out there to support us and whoever can contribute can use our mobile number 0776777518" she said.
