According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima, a taxi reg no UAX 536Z ferrying suspected supporters of Besigye was impounded and its occupants detained.

"As earlier stated, we were not informed of any plans to welcome back Dr Besigye. We want people to go on with business as usual and that's why we are arresting Besigye's supporters" Kayima said.

FDC party secretary for mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe expressed disappointment at how events had played out at the airport.

"We are disappointed that Police is behaving this way because in the Ugandan way of life, we welcome and escort our people in and out of the country"

We don't think it was necessary to whisk Besigye away or arrest his supporters. We are still mobilising our people to look for our president and welcome him home" she added.
