State has 4 witnesses in piglet case

The state has lined up four witnesses to pin two youth who allegedly dumped 10 painted piglets at parliament, on which they placed portraits of various members of Parliament including the speaker and her deputy.
On Friday, state attorney Elizabeth Nandala told court presided over by Buganda Road Court grade one magistrate Marion Mangeni that inquiries in the matter were complete and had four witnesses to testify against the accused.
"Your worship, the inquiries in the case are complete. We have four witness and we are ready to proceed," Nandala said.
The accused are: Ferdinand Lutta and Joseph Lukwago. The dual was charged last Friday with common nuisance and cruelty to animals offences.
They denied the charges and were accordingly remanded to Luzira prisons.
Common nuisance carries a maximum sentence of one year on conviction while cruelty to animal carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment or a reasonable fine.
It is alleged that the dual and others at large on September, 16 at Kimathi Avenue in Kampala dropped 10 piglets at main get of Parliament.
However, defense lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde on Friday opposed the hearing of case as state attorney had requested arguing that state had not disclosed its evidence against his clients as required by law to enable them prepare their defense.
He asked the Magistrate to reject the state application to proceed with the hearing of the case saying, it would tantamount to trial by ambush.
This prompted the Magistrate to adjourn the case to October 18, when the hearing of the case is expected to begin.
