Sep 20, 2016

It is alleged that between February 18 and May 11, Besigye, in various places in Wakiso and Kampala districts, incited the people to overthrow the government

The High Court is expected on Thursday to fix new dates when former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye will report before it to further fulfill one of his bail conditions.

Yesterday, Besigye's sureties reported to the deputy registrar of the Criminal Division Mary Eleanor Khainza's office on his behalf but she was indisposed (not present). However, the clerk advised them to return on Thursday when the registrar would communicate the new dates when Besigye will report to fulfill one of his bail conditions.  Khainza was reportedly attending a judiciary conference at Kabira country club.

The sureties who included FDC president Maj.Gen. Mugisha Muntu and Rukungiri Municipality MP Roland Mugume were led by his lawyer Ernest Kalibbala. While releasing him on bail in July this year, Justice Wilson Masalu Musene, the head of the criminal division ordered Besigye to report to the registrar of the court once every two weeks.

Besigye, who was among  Ugandans that attended the Ugandan North America Association (UNAA) meeting is still abroad. Before Besigye went abroad, he made an application before Justice Yasin Nyanzi and Okayed his visit but he reminded him of other bail conditions.

The FDC strong man is facing treason charges over a video which circulated on social media in which he reportedly swore himself in as president after the 2016 general elections.

The Electoral commission declared President Yoweri Museveni the winner of the election with 60.7% votes and Besigye emerged the second with 35.3%.

It is alleged that between February 18 and May 11, Besigye, in various places in Wakiso and Kampala districts, incited the people to overthrow the government.

He is also accused of declaring himself as president after claiming to have won the February 18 presidential elections.

The case is still under mention at Nakawa Chief Magistrate's Court pending investigations.

He is expected to appear before it on October 12 to know the investigation status.

His charges attract a maximum death sentence on conviction.

Gen. Muntu, Mugume and Kalibbala declined to speak to the media after they reported to the registrar's chambers yesterday.
