Kitgum to ban production of charcoal

Kitgum district chairperson, Jackson Omona said the district executive committee has proposed a motion seeking to regulate the rampant depletion of forest cover for charcoal production and sale.

Plans are underway by Kitgum district leaders to suspend commercial production of charcoal to prevent the increasing indiscriminate cutting of tree covers in the district.

The motion that will require each household to plant a woodlot is currently being scrutinized before the production sectoral committee before it is brought to council for approval and enactment

If approved this move will effect penalties and slap a ban on the issuance of permits to charcoal traders and transporters
