Police in Mukono district is holding four men who were arrested trading in Mukono-Kayunga Road construction materials.

Mukono-Kayunga Road is under construction by SBI Construction Company.

Mukono division Police commander, Fred Ahimbisibwe identified the suspects as Johnson Kyambadde (28) a resident of Naggalama, Andrew Kayemba (26) of Seeta in Baggala Zone, John Ouma (31) of Kabimbiri and Bruce Bazira (25) a private security guard from Nakifuma who was guarding a section of the road from where the materials were being ferried.

Police also impound three vehicles which were transporting the materials. They include; Isuzu registration number UAY 233Q as well as two Fuso trucks registration numbers UAU 912Z and UAK 012C.

Ahimbisibwe said Bazira abandoned his gun and took off as soon as he saw police but he was later arrested.

He said the suspects detained at Mukono Police Station were charged with theft pending prosecution after thorough investigations.

Ahimbisibwe told New Vision that they first trailed the suspects and found out the destination where they were taking the already mixed aggregate stones which they were stealing with the aid of SBI staff under protection of the private security guard.

"Our spy network took us to a place called Ntaawo in a valley where these people have been keeping the stolen materials as they look for market. We found about 10 trips already there worth sh6m," he said.

He added that the same problem of stealing construction materials including cement, stones and fuel was on Kyetume-Katosi-Nyenga Road which is also under construction by SBI and RCC but Police normalized the situation.

"I am warning people who have been buying these materials to stop or risk arrest and be prosecuted. Such culprits are sabotaging the government, we cannot sit back and give them free operation," he warns.

While at Mukono Police Station, the suspects were pinning each other and asking for forgiveness.

The zonal intelligence officer for Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe and Buvuma districts, Maj. Moses Ssegujja expressed dismay at the fact that these people have been stealing the materials meant for the road and the residents were quite without informing Police.

"This is the reason as to why we get substandard roads which last for two years and get spoilt" he noted.
