Stanchart sponsors USPA road safety campaign

"We affirm our commitment to making a contribution towards sensitizing Ugandans about road safety."

KAMPALA - Standard Chartered Bank announced its support of the Uganda Sports Press Association Annual road safety campaign which will be held this Saturday 09th September 2016.

This was announced at a joint press conference held between the two entities at the Standard Chartered Bank headquarters.
 
This year the Bank is sponsoring USPA to a tune of sh5m (Five million shillings only) to facilitate the organization of the road safety campaign. The Bank also recently made a donation of Ugx 15 million shillings towards the construction of the Nkozi hospital emergency unit along Masaka road to support road accident victims.
 
While addressing journalists at a press conference, Head, Corporate Affairs, Brand & Marketing Standard Chartered Bank, Mrs. Hellen Nangonzi Lutakome said that the Bank is committed to supporting USPA in the road safety campaign to support the continuity of its agenda of creating awareness about road carnage and save the lives of Ugandans.

"Uganda is one of the African countries with the highest rate of road accidents, according to a World Health Organisation report on road safety. Uganda is reputed also to be among the highest rate of road accidents among the East African countries and deaths from reckless driving are also on increase leading cause of death in Uganda. It's therefore imperative that we all join hands to combat these unnecessary deaths and save lives.

"I highly commend the passion and effort USPA continues to invest in creating awareness around road safety. This is a worthwhile initiative that Standard Chartered Bank has supported since 2007. We affirm our commitment to making a contribution towards sensitizing Ugandans about road safety and in the same spirit as USPA will dedicate this initiative to the spirit of our own employees who have perished in fatal car accidents over the years.
 "
Nangonzi continued to say; "All efforts must be made to ensure all stakeholders play their role in ending road carnage; we need to hold constructors accountable to constructing roads that are up to standard, ensure the concerned authorities uphold maintenance standards, ensure car owners maintain their vehicles, ensure regulations are put in place to manage the reckless bus drivers, impose penalties or sanctions on owners of vehicles that cause mass deaths on our roads. We need to be decisive to control the levels of road carnage in our country."
 
The president of the Uganda Sports Press Association, Mr. Sabiiti Muwanga thanked Standard Chartered for the sponsorship and partnership once again and said;
 
"Standard Chartered Bank has once again joined hands with us to extend the road safety campaign to our stakeholders. The Bank has been a reliable partner in the fight against road carnage and with this year's sponsorship of Ugx 5 million, we shall once again spread the importance of being cautious drivers and saving lives.
 
Mr. Muwanga concluded by calling upon Ugandans to be more vigilant and caring towards fellow road users to avoid unnecessary road accidents.
 
There is need to act immediately and fast to end Road carnage. All the various agencies that should ensure safer roads should work together to save lives. Public enlightenment should be intensified. Our roads would be safer sign posts were not vandalized, if they were well maintained and a culture of obeying traffic regulations is enforced. We can change this by creating more awareness through initiatives such as this.
