Over 60 Kigezi children to get free surgical care

Out of the 700 children born every month in Greater Kabale, 20 of them are born with surgical cases

Over 60 children in Kigezi region shall get free surgical treatment in Kabale in September.

These children who are mostly born with or acquired surgically correctable abnormalities shall be operated from 12th-16thSeptember, 2016 at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.

The campaign which is championed by Vulnerable Children Surgeries Africa (VCSA) was launched on Saturday through a carwash and a fundraising drive in Kabale Municipality.

According to Dr. Emmanuel Twebaze, the VCSA executive director, despite the surgical camp being free of charge, the fundraising drive was aimed at supporting the basic needs like transport, food and medication.

"Some patients cannot afford to provide for themselves these basic needs despite the need for surgical care," says Twebaze.

Twebaze said that out of the 700 children born every month in Greater Kabale, 20 of them are born with surgical cases.

"Some children we operate on have spine bifida, anorectal malformation, mouth damages, scars among other cases," says Twebaze.

Over sh 760, 000= was collected during the fundraising drive.

According to Liz Akampeire the organisation which started in 2013 has so far seen over 200 children operated.
