KAMPALA - 19 of 32 Muslim clerics' murder suspects recently charged with fresh charges of treason at Nakawa Chief Magistrate's Court were Monday committed to the High Court to face trial.

The accused were sent to the High Court by Nakawa Grade One Magistrate Christine Nantege.

This was after principle state attorneys Thomas Jatico, Rachael Bikhole and Marion Ben-Bella told court that police inquiries in the case were complete and committal papers were also ready to warrant their committal.

Prosecution alleges that the accused and others at large between January 2014 and June 2015 in Kampala, Wakiso, Gulu, Kitgum, Mbale, Masaka, Mpigi, Rakai, Jinja and United Arab Emirates, Kenya and Tanzania contrived a plot to overthrow the government by force of arms which they expressed by utterances and overt acts.

Prosecution further alleges that the accused also between December 2013 and June 2015 at various places in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and United Arab Emirates knew about a group of people who plotted to overthrow the government but failed to inform the relevant authorities.

On Monday, security was tight at the court and few people were allowed in the courtroom. Most of the people who had come to follow the proceedings were restricted from entrance.
