Bakkabulindi hails Ugacof on trade unions

Aug 26, 2016

“It’s important for workers to know their rights and now it’s the obligation of the relevant union leaders to sensitize them."

Minister Charles Bakkabulindi, who represents workers in Parliament, has hailed Ugacof for sealing a memorandum of understanding with Uganda Farm and Agro-based Workers Union to protect the plight of workers in the private coffee processing company.

The minister was the witness as the managing director for Ugacof Kailash Natani and the general secretary of the Union Nelson Wafana signed the deal at the head office at Namanve.

In the agreement, over 350 workers with the company will have their plight protected by having a voice to talk on their behalf, getting study and upgrading opportunities, getting entrepreneurship programs and uttering their grievances in case of need.

Minister Bakkabulindi urged all private and public institutions to register their workers with the relevant trade unions after the government mandate passed in 2011.

"We as representatives of workers in the Parliament are happy because the strength of trade unions is now being felt in many parts of the country," he said.

"It's important for workers to know their rights and now it's the obligation of the relevant union leaders to sensitize them.

"The good atmosphere among the workers does not only make them happy at work but also improves on the productivity on the growth of the country."
