NEMA boss Tom Okurut says waste is a resource of creating wealth.

KAMPALA - The East Africa waste management conference opened at Protea Hotel in Kampala Thursday to discuss waste management issues affecting the region.

Besides hosts Uganda, the conference attracted participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and others.

The state minister of environment Mary Goretti Kitutu expressed concern of non-commitment by East Africa cities to address waste management as heaps of garbage are found uncollected in some cities which is a recipe for cholera outbreak.

On the other hand, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) boss Tom Okurut said most people mistake waste as being bad and yet it is a resource of creating wealth.

NEMA environment impact assessment monitoring officer Dan Kibuuka agreed, saying waste is wealth as materials are recycled for further production in the economy.
