National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary Nicholas Muramagi has applauded Uganda's Olympic team despite their dismal performance at the just concluded games in Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil.

Uganda had a team of 21 athletes at the games but NCS and Muramagi in particular had the biggest hope in marathon runners Jackson Kiprop, Stephen Kiprotich and Solomon Mutai.

"We did not get any medals in the Olympics but it’s only fair to appreciate efforts the sportsmen and women put to try and get something. Even qualifying alone was a remarkable achievement which not all could do" he said.

Muramagi said that as all the athletes are expected back in the country by the end of Wednesday, NCS has planned to host them to a luncheon on Thursday at a venue yet to be confirmed.

Muramagi was particularly impressed by Ronald Musagala's performance that got him into the final of the 1500m race where he finished 11th and Joshua Cheptegei, who qualified for the 10000m final but finished sixth overall.

Mutai finished eighth in the marathon on Sunday while Kiprotich came home in the 14th place. Kiprop completed the race in 80th place.
