Members of Lions Club International Kisoro, in conjunction with Kabale University students, have cleaned Kisoro Hospital. They mopped the out-patient department, administration wing, women clinic and toilets.

The club's president Prince Trevor Mugenga said they had acted as a result of social media information of poor sanitation at the district's largest government hospital in the district. The toilets were dirty, the hospital compound bushy and littering around the hospital. This compelled the club to intervene.

Mugenga hailed the university students for engaging in community charity programmes.

"We must promote health awareness to youth. We should stop blaming government on issues such as sanitation, yet we can do something on it ourselves."

The health facility's senior administrator Scolla Kaberuka attributed the poor sanitation to some patients who don't know how to use flush toilets.

"We are having a plumbing problem in the hospital because some patients don't know how to flush toilets after use. Some use hard papers, banana leaves, among others that in turn block drainage."

She, however, noted that with continuous sensitization on radios and public gatherings, the problem will be solved.

Water shortage at the hospital also hinders usage of flush toilets." During the dry season, water is off and on and this affects the usage of flush toilets. We use pit latrines," said Kaberuka.

She appealed for water-harvesting tanks as an alternative source of water to save on the hospital water bill.
