One dead, 14 injured in Iganga accident

One person died instantly while fourteen others sustained severe injuries in an accident after the vehicle they were travelling in burst a tyre and overturned several times.

The accident occurred at Nakalama village in Iganga district along Tororo-Iganga Highway when the commuter taxi registration number UAV 073B veered off the road and overturned three times at about 12pm.

The deceased was identified as Joshua Olupot, 83, a resident of Maliri village, Marikit Sub County in Tororo district.

James Ochenyi the bereaved son who survived with severe injuries said that they boarded the vehicle in Tororo heading to Kampala to see his brother who was hospitalized in Kampala Hospital.

Iganga police rushed the injured persons to Iganga Hospital while the vehicle was towed to the Police station.

These include; Juliet Atyaka, 19, Nulu Taleka, 25,Florence Namubiru, James Ochenyi, 25, Faith Kadunda (residents of Tororo), Godfrey Kamoga (Lugazi), Eseza Awori (Bugiri), Ayub Mukose, 29, (Jinja), Samalie Phiona (Kampala).

The Iganga District Police Commander, Nassibu Nditta has since cautioned drivers against over speeding which he said could have led to the accident.
