LIRA - A mother of five children has hacked her husband of 15 years to death in his sleep in a remote village in Lira district.

Dorcus Awor reportedly committed the act in the presence of their 13-year-old son Ambrose Okello, whom she is said to have warned not to make any alarm or risk being killed too.

But after the killer wife had fled, the teenage boy, shaken by what he had witnessed, ran to his grandmother and reported to her what had happened.

The incident happened in Itek village in Bar sub-county, Erute South Sunday night.

When she told, Okello's grandmother made an alarm that attracted residents and local police was notified.

Franco Alany, a cousin to the slain man, said when they reached the house, they found Sam Ecel, 38, on the bed lifeless and bloodied.

The axe used by the fugitive killer wife was later found in a pit latrine by police.

The dead man's uncle, Patrick Adoko, said Awor had earlier that evening sent her two children to his home - two kilometres away - to spend the night there. "I think this was a pretext for her to get time to accomplish her mission," he said.

Ecel's elder brother, said the killer woman used to complain that her husband was promiscuous. One time, the family had to sit to resolve the couple's marital issues, added Denis Opitio.

The regional police commander John Ematu confirmed the incident, saying Ecel was hacked in the head, killing him instantly.

He said the woman later handed herself in at Lira Central Police Station and that investigations into the crime are under way. She faces charges of murder.

Only last week a young man Charles Anyii reportedly killed his father in Kole over unclear circumstances and has since been charged with murder and remanded at Lira Prison.
