Traditional healers jailed over exhuming dead bodies

The same court has also sentenced 35-year-old Joseph Ochwo to two years over assault

The Grade 1 magistrate in Mayuge Court, Wilberforce Egesa Masaaka, has sentenced two traditional healers to nine months imprisonment for exhuming human remains.

Jamada Kyengonga and Vincent Mudoola, residents of Igunda village in Imanyiro Sub County in Mayuge district were jailed for nine months each at Bufulubi Prisons in Imanyiro after court found them guilty of exhuming the human remains.

According to prosecution led by Fred Mulami, in December last year, the duo exhumed the remains of the late Ronald Mususwa in Igunda village. Prosecution further stated that the duo exhumed the remains with intention of getting riches.

Mulami asked court to give the respondents a deterrent punishment that would act as a lesson to would be offenders.

"Your worship, the vice of exhuming human remains in Mayuge district is rampant, I therefore, ask you give them a deterrent punishment to scare the would be offenders," Mulami said.

However, the respondents asked court to give them light punishments since they have many responsibilities in their homes.

The same court has also sentenced 35-year-old Joseph Ochwo to two years imprisonment in Bufulubi Prison over assault.

Ochwo, a resident of Bugumya -Kaliro village in Bukabooli Sub County assaulted and stabbed Amuza Isabirye when he had gone to collect a debt.

Court heard that last year, Ochwo stabbed Isabirye and injured him when he had gone to collect sh2m which he had lent him.

Court further ordered Ochwo to pay sh4m as compensation and expenses to Isabirye.
