Buziga: The best view you will ever get

Aug 10, 2016

If you are a Kampala native and you have never been to the hill top in Buziga then you clearly don’t know how beautiful Kampala really is

I have been to places in Kampala but none beats Buziga especially at the hill top right around Cassia Lodge. If you are a Kampala native and you have never been to the hill top in Buziga then you clearly don’t know how beautiful Kampala really is. I was overwhelmed by the kind of air they even breathe in this part of town. The great scenery of the Lake Victoria and basically the day I got up to the hill top I swore to God I will work tirelessly until I buy a house in Buziga. You just have to live here.

Location and Accessibility
A 20 minute drive from the city centre on a not-so-busy traffic day will get you uphill or down whichever place you are destined. It is roughly 10 kilometres from Kampala and is within Makindye division. Bunga, Gaba, Munyonyo, Salaama, Makindye are the neighbouring areas.

Origins
Sheikh Abdul Lubega, one of the elderly residents of Buziga doesn’t know why this hilly place was named so. “I have been here since 1966 but it has never crossed my mind,” he notes. However, seeing that it has a view to die for, the name could have been derived from the Luganda word, “Okuziga” in reference to “finding” or “discovering” or “seeing” depending on the context.

One strange thing though is that 20 or so years ago, this beauty existed but attention wasn’t as forthcoming as it is now. Buziga was basically a bushy area according to the locals and one wonders what people were thinking then. How could they not have seen this amazing place? Would you say the rich of then didn’t appreciate the scenic view?

According to Seruyange Ismail, a shop keeper on the slopes of the hill, taxis were unheard of and one would trek down to Cape Road and board taxis coming from Gaba. Now they are available at Cooper Complex near the Old Taxi Park. The fare is Shs1500.

“In the past it was more prestigious or call it “safer” to identify with Gaba than Buziga whenever one asked about your home. Today it is the opposite, thanks to the quick growth of the area partly or wholly attributed to Speke Resort Munyonyo’s development” He says

When Speke Resort Munyoyo opened up, Buziga’s asking price sky rocketed and has never stopped and so has the popularity of the place.

Rent
Renting in this place especially on the hilltop is so expensive. It is as if you are paying dowry for a woman you are so madly in love with. As a matter of fact, most of the houses and apartments are paid for in dollars which means that only the rich and expatriates would live here.

Buying a plot of land in Buziga right now is so expensive that if you were not born in an old money family or somehow won a jackpot you should not even think of coming with your 20 million looking for land here. It has joined the likes of  Nakasero, Kololo and Muyenga when it comes to land pricing.

Moses Kityo, a broker says small plots of land of say 50x50 can be as costly as Shs80m, and then 50x100 likewise could be in the Shs100m to Shs120m depending on the location. Others, slightly bigger can go for Shs200m upwards. “Although most of the land belongs to the Kabaka, land here is generally expensive,” he notes.

Security

The security in this place is very good since most of the houses there have askaris or guards manning them. However there are those petty thefts that can’t be avoided in a developed area and these happen mostly on the lower slopes of the hill.
