“The focus is now restoring hope in people through leaders who shall fight this dictatorial regime,”

Forum for Democratic Change leaders in Gulu district under the guidance of the party president have agreed to bury their differences and mobilise support for their party candidates in Omoro district.

In a two day meeting that ended on Saturday Major Gen. Mugisha Muntu said while its normal to have divided opinion over a particular candidate, success cannot be achieved with internal divisions.

"The focus is now restoring hope in people through leaders who shall fight this dictatorial regime," he said.

Muntu's intervention follows a split within the FDC in Gulu with one faction led by Martin Ojara Mapenduzi the Gulu district chairman supporting Douglas Peter Okello the former district vice chairman.

Okello who was also the former district speaker, was rated thrice as the best speaker in the whole country by ACODE, an organization which assesses the performance of local governments in Uganda.

Another faction is led by Betty Aol Ocan who is rallying behind Simon Tolit Akeca who is the party flag bearer for LC V chairmanship of Omoro district.

When contacted on phone, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi the Gulu district chairman acknowledged the decision taken by the party president noting that it's good for expanding the party.

Mapenduzi noted that such a decision is to bring on board individuals like Douglas Peter Okello and quickly reechoed that there's nothing wrong with supporting his former district vice chairman who has better capacity to deliver.

Moses Abonga, the Laroo division chairman who is also behind Okello the former Gulu district NRM chairman but contesting as an independent said; "the decision has been taken as a party but not based on our individual interest."

However, Muntu emphasized that for effective push to change this current regime, opposition should build a strong base at all levels of leadership.

He noted that, to restore hope in the minds of people, it requires leaders who have the same thinking right from village to national level.

The FDC boss made the remarks on Saturday at Pearl Afrique hotel.

He said the focus for FDC as a party is to win all elective positions in Omoro and the other newly created districts.
