A total of 200 contract staff in the health ministry have been laid off, following a new restructuring exercise in public service.

Health minister, Dr. Jane Aceng told New Vision on Friday that the decision follows a cabinet decision last financial year to have a new structure.

"Many things have changed including technology and the population is on the increase. We need to have full time qualified and competent staff to be able to serve," Aceng said

" All the 200 contracts will not be renewed. We have requested them to hand over office and apply afresh. If they are fit for the job, they will be recruited," Aceng added.

She said the ministry was due to submit to the Health Service Commission requirements needed for new recruitments.

"Once the Commission advertises, we encourage our contract staff to reapply," Aceng said.
