LUWERO - Two secondary school teachers in Luwero district have been arrested for allegedly using fake appointment letters to try and get into civil service.

It's an ongoing operation to net the culprits, with police saying many such other teachers are at large.

Ideally, teachers have to officially obtain appointment letters and posting instructions from the education ministry to be put on government payroll.

Savannah regional police commander Julius Tusingwire said it could be a bigger racket within the district.

The two arrested are a male and female, both from Mazzi Secondary School in Bamunanika County.

The district's assistant chief administrative officer, Christopher Oketayot said the arrests followed an investigation by district authorities and police.

The investigation revealed that eight out of the 64 new staff posted to secondary schools in the district by the education ministry in October 2015, could not be authenticated by the same ministry.

Oketayot said that when the names were submitted to the ministry, only 56 were cleared while the remaining eight were rejected and the district authorities were cautioned that the rejected teachers could have forged both the appointment letters and posting instructions.

The official said he interrogated one of the arrested suspects who confessed that she had fraudulently secured her appointment letter through a relative without sitting for an interview.

The regional police commander said the hunt for the remaining suspects is still on.
