According to Odoi, about 11,000 students were admitted to Makerere University and they are due to report on August 6.

The issuance of provisional admission forms at Makerere University has kicked off peacefully with a good number of fresh students turning up to pick their forms.

The exercise conducted by the University convocation executives was done under the supervision of the university management and the chairman convocation Prof Tanga Odoi.

According to Odoi, about 11,000 students were admitted to Makerere University and they are due to report on August 6.

Their intervention follows the decision by the non-teaching staffs of all the public universities to continue with their sit down strike protesting government's failure to pay their salary arrears and enhancement totaling to over sh50bn.

Odoi while supervising his team said that all other universities had finished giving out admission letters, but it was only Makerere that had failed.

"The strike can continue and I support them to look for their industrial rewards but you cannot stop parents from paying fees. Parents can only pay fees when they receive admission letters, and the fees they pay, is what will help us to pay incentives, so since other public universities agreed that the letters be given, there is no one going to block the issuance of letters to the students, "he added.

He said that convocation is to pay shs10, 000 to volunteers per day as long as the strike is still on adding that they intend to spend about sh300, 000 on thirty people per day.

Odoi said that the convocation which brings together the University workers, former students and their parents could not allow seeing students and parents suffering when it has an account which has money.

He said that the volunteers are available to issue out admission letters until the sit down strike is halted.

At Kyambogo University, the University spokesperson Lawrence Madete said the Management is trying to consult with various stake holders to see how these issues can be resolved.

The Non-teaching staffs in all public universities went on a sit down strike starting on Monday seeking for payment of sh28.5b for salary enhancement and sh28.5 for arrears.
