Museveni receives petition to remove presidential age limit

He has remained tight-lipped about whether he accepts the proposed amendment or not

A proposal to lift presidential age limits has been handed over to President Yoweri Museveni by a group of NRM supporters led by Kyankwanzi woman MP, Ann-Maria Nankabirwa.

Confirming the development to New Vision, Don Wanyama, the senior presidential press secretary, said they handed over the petition to Museveni on Monday at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi.

The Nankabirwa group wants to amend Article 102 (b) of the Constitution to remove age limits.

However, Museveni has remained tight-lipped about whether he accepts the proposed amendment or not.

When asked recently about the proposal, Museveni said he had not interested himself in the proposal.

"I have not got involved in the age limit talk. I am doing my own work, which is to implement the social contract I made with voters, which is to develop the country in these five years," he said.

He emphasised that the age-limit talk is a diversionary ploy and it had not been discussed anywhere during the week-long retreat of ministers, permanent secretaries and members of the Central Executive Committee of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

"We have been here for seven days, and nobody has talked about removing the age limits," he added.
