The ambulance was carrying an expectant mother

An ambulance which was recently donated to the Mayuge community by the district woman Member of Parliament Julie Mukoda Zabwe was attacked by unknown people.

The ambulance was attacked on Thursday night at Kityerera village in Kiyerera Sub County when it was from picking a patient from Malongo health centre.

Confirming the incident, the Mayuge district Police commander Denis Odoch said the ambulance was slightly damaged.

"Unknown people ambushed at Kityerera village and attacked the ambulance which was from picking a patient," Odoch said adding that no one was injured in the attack.

Robert Mukisa alias Kadogo, the driver said "When we reached Kityerera, unknown people stoned the ambulance and it was slightly damaged".

He said that the ambulance was carrying an expectant mother who had been referred to St. Francis Hospital in Buluba for care.

Odoch condemned the act and said that Police is investigating and hunting for the perpetuators and once arrested, they will face the wrath of the law.

This being the first ambulance in the district, it was donated to support transportation of patients of referral cases from lower health units to hospitals.

Prior, the district had no ambulance and as a result a number of patients died on the way to hospitals.

Dr. Charles Nabangi, the Mayuge district health officer also condemned the attack.

"For years, Mayuge district has been grappling with the challenge of lack of ambulance. We got a donation but some people are vandalizing it" Nabangi said.

He said the recent donation should be used to save lives.
