Return to work, Besigye tells supporters

“The struggle continues and we shall continue to fight for the rule of law."

KAMPALA - Opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye reported to the High Court on Tuesday as part of his bail requirement, and later called on hundreds of his supporters who had filled the city to return to work.

The former FDC presidential flag-bearer was granted bail by the High Court a fortnight ago and was required to report to court once every two weeks.

He had been on remand at Luzira Prison prior on treason charges.

On his way to court Tuesday morning, hundreds of Besigye's supporters followed his vehicle, chanting and cheering him on.

Police guided his vehicle at every turn of his transition through the city centre as the FDC politician's followers danced and even prostrated before him.

As part of the bail package, Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, was ordered by Justice Wilson Masalu Musene to report to the registrar of High Court Criminal Division once every two weeks.

And after fulfilling this condition, Besigye, clad in his typical blue checkered and hooded shirt, and emerging out of the roof of his car, waved to his supporters, and every once in a while flashed the FDC V-sign.

Sometimes, he would just stand there akimbo, letting his eyes pan around the huge crowds following and praising him.

His vehicle came to stop at Katonga Road where he has offices and he addressed his supporters.

"Listen to me, these people [the Police] are leaving us to walk not because they want us to do so, but because they can no longer handle us and our demand for freedom.

"The struggle continues and we shall continue to fight for the rule of law and our democratic freedom as Ugandans. Now I have a meeting here, but please go back. I will come back," he said, drawing deafening cheers.
