The Savannah regional police commander, Julius Tusingwire, on Monday confirmed the incident, adding that the police had mounted a search for both the assailants and the gun.

A Police officer in Luweero narrowly survived being killed by unidentified panga-wielding thugs who cut him on the head and later fled with his gun on Sunday.

Festo Nsubuga, a police officer attached to Ndejje police post in Luweero, was attacked at around 8.00 pm by unidentified assailants who waylaid him as he returned from duty at Ndejje University.

The Savannah regional police commander, Julius Tusingwire, on Monday confirmed the incident, adding that the police had mounted a search for both the assailants and the gun.

Tusingwire said the assailants who numbered three attacked the policeman with pangs cutting him three times on the head before they fled with his gun.

The incident comes slightly more than a year after last year's April 1 incident during which thugs attacked Kasana police station in Luwero town, killing a policeman and seriously wounding his female colleague.

Nsubuga's colleagues at Ndejje police post said he had spent the day at Ndejje University where he had been deployed to guard the premises.
They said he was walking to the barracks when he met his assailants.

He was by Monday being admitted at Bombo military hospital.
