This comes after health workers under their umbrella Association Uganda Medical Association sought the intervention of the Speaker of Parliament

The minister for primary healthcare Sarah Opendi has revealed that government will not be able to increase the salaries and allowances of health workers in Uganda this financial year.

This comes after health workers under their umbrella Association Uganda Medical Association sought the intervention of Speaker Rebecca Kadaga on the matter on Wednesday.

Opendi said government has already passed this year's budget and therefore it cannot take into account their request until next year.

"The budget was long passed and now we are in the implementation phase and it's a little difficult to increase the salaries of the workers" Opendi said.

The minister however reiterated government's commitment towards increasing the salaries in the future.

"This is a work in progress because we all know the importance of the health workers, the amount of work they do, and we are still committed to increasing their salaries across the board which hopefully will be done in the next financial year" she added.
