Okwong beats Muhumuza to win Mehta Open Golf tournament

Jul 18, 2016

The two Toro Golf Club players had tied on 140 gross each after two rounds over two days at the par 70 course in the annual tournament that attracted 86 players.

National team player Titus Okwong won a sudden death play-off against Adolf Muhumuza to win the Mehta Open golf tournament at the Mehta Golf Club in Lugazi on Sunday.

The two Toro Golf Club players had tied on 140 gross each after two rounds over two days at the par 70 course in the annual tournament that attracted 86 players.

In the sudden death played on the par 3 hole No.18 Okwong got a par with Muhumuza bogeying the hole to lose by a stroke.

Muhumuza's tee shot in the play-off pitched near the apron and rolled back the hilly green. His second shot, a miscalculated chip also failed to make it to the green before his third; another chip kissed the edge of the hole and rolled a foot away.

On the other hand Okwong's tee shot was nearer to the green though it also required a chip which also kissed the cup but was also a foot away from where he took the winning shot.

Okwong  went into the decisive round with a one-stroke lead and was already four strokes up after two holes on the final day but lost the lead on the par 4 hole No.10 which he double bogeyed.

Muhumuza then took the initiative and was one stroke up to the 15th hole, but again dropped a stroke on the subsequent hole to take the championship to sudden death.

"I was struggling with my putting despite my short game and driving being spot on. I would like to thank Hillary Rubaale of Granite Supplies who ensured I practiced on the course two days before the tournament," Okwong said.

Muhumuza's miss revoked memories of the 2014 Uganda Open where he also lost to eventual winner Willy Kitata in a similar sudden death play-off.

Home boy Clovis Kasangaki who finished third was left to lure the two-stroke penalty he incurred when he lost his ball in the sugar plantation on the 16th fairway.

But the Lugazi boys salvaged themselves when they swept all prizes in Groups A-C.

The tournament was sponsored by Mehta Group, Lugazi Sugar, City Tyres (BKF) and Coca Cola.
