Besigye due in court for 'inciting violence'

Jul 18, 2016

Besigye last appeared in this court in April.

Opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye is due to appear in court in Kabale today.

The former FDC presidential candidate will be in court to answer charges of inciting violence in 2012 which led to the destruction of police vehicles.

Besigye will appear before Kabale Grade I magistrate alongside other people including Ingrid Turinawe, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Kawempe South MP Mubarrak Munyagwa, and others.

Besigye last appeared in this court in April for the same reason and his case was postponed to June.

But he could not attend the session since he was in jail at the time.

The FDC politician and his colleagues allegedly incited the public at Kabale Stadium in July 2012, leading to the injuring of four policemen and destruction of three police cars by their stone-pelting supporters.

Besigye will be back in court hardly a week after the High Court in Kampala granted him bail after being on remand at Luzira Prison on treason charges.

Two months ago, he was arraigned before Moroto Chief Magistrate, Charles Yeteise and charged with treason. Prosecution is saying that Besigye and others still at large on February 20 and May 11, 2016, planned to forcefully ascend to the office of the President.

President Museveni was re-elected into power in the February elections, beating his long-time political rival  for the fourth consecutive time. Besigye however claimed he had won the election and went on to unconstitutionally swear himself in as president.
