Chenga Challenge goes to Moroto

Karamoja will have an opportunity of hosting a major sports event when Moroto town hosts the City Tyres Chenga Challenge football finals on September 9-10.

Karamoja region is an area that is deprived of sports activities. However, City Tyres has opened an opportunity in a region that was previously ravaged by armed cattle rustling.

Karamoja will have an opportunity of hosting a major sports event when Moroto town hosts the City Tyres Chenga Challenge football finals on September 9-10.

It will be a blessing for Karamoja people to witness the final for the first time. Moroto town is the heart of the Northeastern Karamoja.

The event will be a climax of the national Under-14 football championship organized by Friends of Football (FOF).

The championship that has been running at zonal level in all areas of the country, enters the regional level starting with Central region finals at Old Kampala on Saturday.

The Kampala meets sets, kick-start a two-month campaign that will involve over 3500 players from the 11 regions in Uganda. Central region are defending champions of the event that was last held in 2014.

Since its inception in 1998, the City Tyres Chenga Challenge has groomed national players like Denis Onyango, Farouk Miya and Mike Mutyaba over the years.

While unveiling the sponsorship package for the 13th edition of the event at City Tyres headquarters in Kampala on Monday, City Tyres marketing Herbert Bashaasha promised another exciting show of talent.

"One of our social corporate responsibility is to invest in football with the sole aim of building tomorrows national team. The journey has been long but our efforts are beginning bear fruits. We look forward to continue supporting football," he said.

On the choice of Moroto, Bashaasa said; "We have never taken the tournament to that region. I think they are missing football. The people there should see exciting football. This may an avenue for opening other developments in the area."

Friends of Uganda (FOF) chairman Eddie Butindo thanked City Tyres for the support.

"Ugandan sport will not to prosper until national teams are built from junior teams. That is why I thank City Tyres for being a consistent partner in football," he said Butindo who also called for the creation of sports facilities.
