The Ruhinda contest was heated and Capt. Dononzio Kahonda was arrested

Capt. Dononzio Kahonda who defeated the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs Gen. Kahinda Otafiire for the Ruhinda seat has hailed President Yoweri Museveni for re-appointing Otafiire to cabinet.

Kahonda said Otafiire remaining a cabinet minister makes him (Kahonda) safe.

"It makes me proud because we have a representative there in cabinet," Kahonda noted.

The Ruhinda contest was heated and Kahonda was arrested over allegations of joining the army using fake academic papers. Despite his absence in the campaigns, voters went ahead to vote him into office.

Otafiire denied his involvement in the arrest of Kahonda.

Kahonda has now invited Otafiire to join hands as district leaders and form a team to work for the people.

"Elections and politicking are over. Let us work together to lobby for our district and market it," Kahonda said.

Kahonda was on Saturday speaking during the district's tourism promotion day at Mitooma district headquarters.

It was organized by Kahonda in collaboration with Federation of Uganda Tourism Initiative (FUTI) to benchmark the district's tourism potential.

The day was celebrated with different activities including a marathon, cycling while women organized stalls to showcase art and craft pieces. Some sub counties of Mitooma district border Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Kahonda together with the district woman MP Jova Kamateeka and the district chairman Benon Karyaija denied allegations of writing to the President decampaigning Otafiire that he should not be appointed a minister.

"We didn't go to the President to say we don't want a minister to be appointed from Ruhinda," Karyaija said.

At the function, Kamateka said, "we want to see harmony in our district where leaders are working together."

The Buhweju MP Francis Mwijukye urged leaders to have team work saying, "We should desist from conflicts."

The Rubirizi district woman MP Grace Kesande said efforts must be put in place to reconcile all people who participated in the elections and lost.

Karyaija asked the MPs to lobby government to make sure that LCI and LCII elections are conducted stressing that lack of substantive LCI and LCII leaders has hampered the implementation of some of the government programs.

FUTI chairperson John Emily Otekat called upon leaders to promote tourism including communal tourism at all levels.

Otekat urged government to expedite the process of reviving Uganda Airlines noting that, "tourism cannot flourish if we don't have a national airline flying from Entebbe to international airports."

He applauded President Museveni for committing his government towards Uganda Airlines' revival.

"We have a clear headed President but the problems are selfish people surrounding him and the corruption that has penetrated the society," he argued.
