MP Kabaziguruka, 22 others remanded over treason

Treason and offences relating to security carries a maximum penalty of death on conviction

Twenty three people, including Nakawa Member of Parliament Michael Kabaziguruka have been charged with treason at the army General Court Martial (GCM).

On Tuesday, the court presided over by Lt Gen Andrew Gutti read out the charges, as the accused persons stood in the dock.

He later remanded them to Kigo Prison and Military Police Headquarters in Makindye after they denied the charges.

They were charged with offences relating to security and treachery (Treason) contrary to section 130 (1) (f) and 129 (a) of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) Act of 2005. Treason and offences relating to security carries a maximum penalty of death on conviction.

Those charged alongside Kabaziguruka include Capt Andrew Ojaa, Cpl  Geofrey Idro, Cpl Richard Odama, Cpl Raymond Drachiri, L/Cpl Inyan Godfrey, Pte Jacob Obua, Pte Christopher Omony, Pte Geofrey Amude, Pte Shafik Masembe and AIP Ferdinand  Obulejo.

Others are Rtd Pte Bilal Asuman, Cpl Emmanuel Tibesigwa, Cpl Justine Elwelu, Pte Ibrahim Angola, Pte James Matagi, Pte Lucy Achan, Pte Paul Billy Oguti, Pte James Byamaka, Pte Ambrose Oonyu, Pte Benon Tugume, Rtd Pte Fredrick Namara and Musa Lutwama .

Prosecution alleges that the accused and others still at large between February and June 2016 at different places in Wakiso, Kampala and Luweero districts with intent to prejudice the security or interests of Uganda committed acts of treachery, infiltrate the UPDF and engaged themselves in war like activities against the government.

Prosecution further alleges that the accused and others still at large in the same months and places plotted to overthrow the government by use of force of arms.
