Police in Kaliro have arrested four people for allegedly stealing a lorry truck loaded with 320 bags of cement.

Alex Mwesigwa, Jona Ibanda, Eriakesi Jimmy and Jona Tusubira were arrested after they broke into Tororo cement industry's parking yard on Friday at around 11:00am and drove away a truckload of cement to Namugongo sub county, Kaliro district where they offloaded it.

Unknown to the men was that the lorry with registration number UAY 947R had a tracking device that helped the owner to locate it.

The driver of the lorry, Willaim Sendagire said after spending the entire night trying to load the bags of cement on the lorry, he decided to take a rest.  When he woke up two hours later, the cement truck had disappeared.

The cement was discovered at one Rashid Weibale's home in Bulondo village, Namugongo Sub County, but police failed to arrest him because he was not at home.

The four suspects were arrested at Buniro village at around 3:30pm when they were trying to dump the truck at Iganga town.

Kaliro district police commander, Henry Kintu, said the suspects were arrested following a joint operation between police in the three districts of Iganga, Kaliro and Tororo.

Kintu said the owner of the truck, an Indian businessman based in Kampala, managed to help police by providing information about the movement of the lorry using the tracking device.

One of the suspects, Jona Tusubira is admitted at a private clinic in Kaliro town council after being shot in the leg by police as he attempted to resist arrest.

Police said the suspects will soon appear before court to answer to charges of theft.
