Politics should not ruin your marriage

Jun 13, 2016

Many couples have lost their marriages because of being so much involved in politics but marriage counselors advise married couples in politics not to fall prey of ruining their marriages through politics.

Now that  all political leaders  who were voted into power all over the country for the period of 2016-2021 have sworn in and  ready to start  their work ,   married politicians should not  abandon their homes  by putting all their time in political offices.

Many couples  have lost their marriages because of being so much involved  in politics but marriage counselors advise  married couples  in politics not to fall prey of ruining their marriages through politics.

In this case the woman can be supporting a different party from his husband's  and it is the party that she is going to work for during this term.
Margret Kanyali a marriage counselor at mother's  union Mukono diocese says that  the bible tell wives to  be submissive to their husbands and this reminds wives  to always be submissive to their husbands always .

‘If  a  woman  is supporting  a  different  political  party other than her husband's   and it's the party that she is going to serve during this term she must not  bring political issues in their home  in order to keep peace  and harmony in the family.

Men are like babies because  they would like to be favoured in everything and  everybody  to  agree to what ever they suggest so the woman should leave the political difference in her office and when she returns home she doesn't mention any thing concerning politics' says Kanyali

Theo  Musanyusa  professional marriage counselor at J.J Musanyusa Foundation in Makindye   says that politics is  a  game that when  your rival  during campaigns wins you , you can
adjust and work for the betterment of  your area  or the country at large to go forward.
However  marriage  is not a game  where you can decide  to do things that  disgust your spouse  and go away with it.

Politics  can destroy your marriage which   you would have  taken a long way  by keeping the oath you made together  of  death  doing you  part  yet politics is  short lived.

Therefore in this way a couple especially the woman has to  be  very careful when  getting involved in taking  part in politics.

Pastor Frank  Butayi  the senior pastor of  Assembly Restoration Church  in Nakulabye who is also a marriage counselor says that  married couples should  choose between Politics and   marriage  of what came first in their home.

This will give them a guide line on how to balance the two aspects.

‘Politics is a game and is  short leaved while marriage is a long term covenant which should be broken when one of them  dies  therefore  politics  shouldn't ruin a marriage.

However in this case men should give a chance to their wives to support a candidate of a political party of their choice  but the women shouldn't show it openly that they are not supporting their husband's party.

A couple must put in mind that those political leaders they are  supporting don't know them personally therefore they should not put all their strength in a raw deal like this for if the marriage fails these political leaders will not come to their rescue' adds Pastor Butayi

‘On our wedding   day which took place over 16 years  ago  we swore before GOD  and the congregation that attended  the church session  that  we have become one and nothing will do us part expect death.

This meant that everything we do should be in one line. If my wife doesn't  support me in doing some thing, however much I love  to do it, I just have to abandon It' says George Fred Kagimu   Mukono Municipality mayor.

He said that his  wife was the  back bone of  his   campaigns  together with is  children  that led him to victory.

Moureen Bukenya aspired for  the woman councilor  seat for Goma Sub-county in Mukono  dIstrict  as an independent  but lost   says that she has been in
marriage for the last 16 years with her husband who is an NRM supporter  but has never got a problem  in her marriage.
‘ My husband knows that Iam not an NRM supporter  yet he is one  but he gives me freedom to support what I want.

However when Iam at home I don't  talk about politics because I know that it can bring problems in our marriage yet I would like to keep it shinning till death does us part.
Citie Waswa the Managing Director of Citie homes Limited says that   his wife has a right to support  any party she wishes  and he respects her decision.

But he however says that politics must not  over ride  the  family responsibilities and the love between  us.

‘Naturally it  is  not normal  for a couple  to have the same thinking  on a given issue  but if politics is detected to ruin our  marriage  it can be left out and we go ahead after all its not a must that as citizens  we should all be involved in politics.  Good politics in a country stands on stable families and if  politics is what is breaking the marriage then its bad politics' says Waswa

Dr Livingstone Sewanyana  the Executive Director  of Foundation for Human Rights Initiatives says that everybody has to choose what they want to support because marriage and politics are two different things. Those who think that if they are married and therefore have to move in the same line its wrong because it affects human rights. In human nature you cannot  have the same thinking and doing things in the same way.

‘If my wife chooses to support a  different party from mine I have no problem with it because its her right to do so' says  Sewanyana.
