Two vehicles collide on Masaka road

One person was injured in an accident involving two vehicles; a Canter and a Mark II number UAU 967/Z at Nsimbe , in Mpigi district on the Kampala -Masaka highway  on Friday.

According to Ahmad Kimera Sseguya, the district police commander Mpigi, one person identified as  Deo Masereka who was driving the  Mark II was injured in the accident.

Kimera said the accident occurred at 5:30pm on Friday when a driver for the canter coming from Masaka heading towards Kampala attempted to dodge one of the holes dug by Reynolds Construction Company [RCC] that is carrying out repairing works on the road. The vehicle swerved off his lane and collided with the Mark II heading towards Masaka.

Both vehicles immediately caught fire which burnt them beyond repair. The canter driver  fled and the Mark II  driver was rescued by residents  and rushed to St Monica health center in Katende-Mpigi. He sustained minor injuries.

The fire brigade police unit from Kampala was called in to put down the fire that was threatening to spread to nearby houses. Traffic along the highway came to a standstill for close to one hour as police was trying to extinguish the fire.

According to Kimera, the accident was caused by disregard for road signs on the part of the canter driver who was driving at a high speed. The road sign in the area advises drivers to slow down at this spot.

The wreckages of both vehicles were towed to Mpigi central police station. Nsimbe in Mpigi district is one of the death corridors listed by the traffic police on the Kampala -Masaka highway.

In July 2015, two miss tourism beauty queens perished in an accident at the same spot after a vehicle they were travelling in registration number UAN 690B Prado swerved off the road and rammed into the swamp at Nsimbe , Norah Atim, the second runner-up for miss tourism in 2014 and Resty Namawejje a journalist with NTV died on spot while Barbra Nakiwolo the miss tourism central was pronounced dead by doctors in Mulago, Police blamed the accident on reckless driving by the Prado driver.
