Nakaseke roads frustrating traffic flow

James Magembe, a cattle transporter, whose truck was among the many that got stuck on spot said district authorities have not intervened yet they have continued to levy a fee of Sh15,000 per truck.

Though   Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has   fixed some roads   that were  affected  by the recent heavy down pour,  the  condition of some district and community access roads have continued to deteriorate.

Goods   trucks   majorly in Nakaseke cattle corridor  are  finding   it difficult  to cross  the  Kayiwaggobe   swampy area in  Nakaseke  district   due  to  the  potholes    developed by  the water  that  recently  submerged  the entire carriageway .

James Magembe, a cattle transporter, whose truck was among the many that got stuck on spot said   district  authorities  have not  intervened yet  they have  continued  to levy a fee  of Sh15,000  per truck.

He said    the maintenance costs for  vehicles has shot up with  increased fuel   consumption for vehicles  as a result of poor sections  of  the  roads  ,yet  they    do not  need  a lot of  money  to  rectify  but  have continued  to frustrate  both  farmers and  traders.

"Some milk tankers   always get stuck on the way  yet the product is fragile. UNRA should device means of  mitigating  the  problem  by  repairing the most  damaged parts  to make  the road  passable  as  they look for funds to  repair the  entire road,' said  Magembe.

However  Jimmy  Adwek    UNRA   manager  in charge of the Central region  said the recent  rain  had  left many roads  and bridges   damaged  and  measures  are  being taken  to   fix them .

He said   their Luweero station is  making a number of interventions   to repair  roads  that were  cut off   by the recent  heavy  rains  like  the  Kaloke bridge on River Mayanja  connecting Semuto and  Namayumba .

"We  sympathize  with  the  affected  communities but we  are trying our level best  to mitigate   the situation," said Eng. Adwek
