Byandala back in court as Katosi Road case resumes

Byandala is accused alongside five others are accused of causing financial loss of over sh24.7b

Hearing of the Katosi Road fraud case against former minister of Works and Transport, Abraham Byandala and his co-accused resumes Wednesday at the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala. 

Byandala, 65, and five others are accused of causing financial loss of over sh24.7b to government. The money was meant for the upgrade of Mukono-Katosi Road from gravel to bitumen standard.  

Others include three former Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) officials; Berunado Ssebbugga, 54, (former Acting Executive Director), Joe Ssemugooma, 54, (Acting director finance and Administration), Marvin Baryaruha, 45, (legal counsel).

Last year, all the officials were relieved of their duties by the new Executive Director Allen Kagina. 

Others are city businessman Apolo Senkeeto, 45, former Housing Finance Bank official Isaac Mugote and Mark Kalyesubula. 

The accused are batting 23 counts of abuse of office, disobedience of lawful orders, causing financial loss, corruption, theft, uttering of false documents, obtaining money by false pretences, conspiracy to defraud, obtaining execution of a security by false pretences and aiding and abetting the offence of causing financial loss.   

The former director planning for UNRA, Eng. David Ssali Luyimbazi is expected to be cross-examined by the defence lawyers.
