Silverfin Swim Club hires Phillipines coach

The Silverfin Swim Club is determined to build on their impressive display at the annual Kenya Junior Championships where a team of 14 swimmers won 14 medals at the Makini School in Nairobi last week.

Hannah Kyanda (1 gold + 2 silver + 1 bronze) and Zuri Owiny (1 silver + 2 bronze), were also outstanding alongside Adam Moussa, Anelka Okello, Joshua Lumonya, Zuri Owiny and Yonnah Lumonya for the Silverfins Academy,  who also won the 100m freestyle and 100m Medley Relay for the 11 and 8 year olds respectively.

To ensure the team of young swimmers continues to flourish, the club has aquired the services of Elite Head Coach Rose Roddriguez from the Phillipines who comes with over 25 years experience as a swimming program specialist, according to Naome Wandera, the club's Communications Secretary.

Rodriguez who starts work next month, joins Silverfin having coached at Ateneo de Davao University, Leyte Sports Academy, and Philippine Center of Excellence for Aquatic Sports among others. She will work at the club for one year.

She is a member of Philippine Swimming, Inc. (PSI), World Coaches Swimming Association (WSCA), American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) and Regional Director (Davao Chapter) Philippine Life Saving Society (PLSS ).

She will put her expertise to work by developing and strengthening the capacity of Silverfin's coaching programs, ensuring expanded local coaching capacity and foundational swimmer development competencies for long term performance and improvement.

The club is also looking forward to participating in the USF's National Club Championships in June 2016, The Kenya 10 years and over short course championships and the KSF Long Course Championships later in the year.  Swimmers from the club will also participate in the Excel Independence Gala through their schools in October.

The Silverfin is also to continue promoting the half day pentathlon event- a five event race in which all participating athletes compete in four strokes in equal distance and in the 100 meters individual medley aimed at self-improvement rather than winning.

"We continue to work towards being a club which is not necessarily the biggest but the best where at Silverfin each swimmer is a winner, if not today, tomorrow. We will also strive to continue growing and nurturing our swimmers talent in a firm but loving and comfortable environment where there is no pressure or judgement on any swimmer to win, but to improve and do their best each and every time they get into the pool," Judy Kyanda the Silverfin chairperson stated.
