Holders St. Mary SS Kitende set the tone for the COPA Coca-Cola on Tuesday after hammering Kitebi College 9-0 in the preliminary round in Soroti.

The result underlined the Wakiso giants as strong contenders for the 9th title of the national secondary schools soccer showpiece that has drawn 60 teams at Teso College Aloet.

Fred Atuhwera opened the scoring for Kitende with a 5th minute header in the group C encounter.

Alex Komakech stretched the lead in the 30th minute while Willy Ochieng made it 3-0 in the first half as the Wakiso giants put their Rubaga Division opponents on the back foot.

As Kitende pressed deeper in the later half, Vipers Sports Club striker Pius Wanji grabbed a hat trick. Komakech netted a brace while Nurdin Bunjo and Sabiiti Desire completed the rout.

"This is a good start which gives us a strong foundation. We are not taking any team lightly which are going to work hard to retain this title," vowed coach Richard Wasswa after the triumph.

"The good thing is that the grounds are good remarked Kitende. My players can do anything with the ball," he added who leads Kitende against Alere SS.
