Defending champions D'Mark Chess Club is among the 29 teams set for the first ever pre-season chess tournament at Hotel Africana in Kampala Sunday.

The event, organised by the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF), is part of a plan to split the league into two divisions ahead of the new season.

"We currently have many teams competing and we cannot just come out and dictate on the groups so we opted to have teams battle each other in various groups," UCF secretary Christopher Turyahabwe (insert) said.

The top seven teams in the previous season - title holders D'Mark, City, Kireka, Mulago Knights, Mulago Kings, Makindye and SOM Chess Academy automatically booked slots in the seven groups.

The other teams including Mulago Rooks, Aviation, MUBS, Mulago Overs, Mengo, Mulago Pawns, Lweza, Crestals, Bunamwaya, MUK, Comrades, Mulago Queens, UCU Knights, Entebbe, Chess Warriors, Kyambogo, Enkabi, Busitema, UCU Queens, Maisha, Ndejje and DECODA will be entered into a raffle draw this morning.

The top two teams in each group will qualify to play in the first division. The other teams will compete in the second division.

Activities of the new season will start on May 29.

"This kind of arrangement was agreed upon by the team managers and we feel the outcome will increase the level of competition locally," Turyahabwe added.
