Two athletes qualify for World Junior Championships

Uganda finished second overall in the event

Two junior athletes qualified for the World Junior Championships event as Uganda finished second in the Eastern Africa Junior Athletics Championships that took place in Dar es Salaam over the weekend.

Bronze medalist in the women 5000m, Mercyline Chelangat, hit the world junior championships mark after clocking 16 minutes 29 seconds inside the women qualifying time of 16 minutes 40 seconds while another Martin Musau also qualified for the event.

Musau clocked 14:07 inside the 14:15 qualifying mark, with another runner Abel Chebet narrowly missing the mark after clocking 14:17.

Chebet was a victim of tagging in the race as he was pushed, falling on the track with three laps to go. They finished 5th and 6th overall.

Uganda finished second overall in the event behind Kenya after winning four gold medals, which all came from the field athletes.

Bayan Odong won a gold medal in the men shot put and discus competition. Josephine Lalam and Moses Oceng won also gold in the respective women and men javelin competitions.

Uganda also won 5 silver medals and three bronze medals in the competition that attracted five countries with Kenya finishing top of the medal table.

The team was expected to return on Sunday.
