Following the acute shortage of accommodation for pupils and teachers in Namayingo district, a US-based NGO has donated sh147m towards the construction of two dormitories and two staff houses at Kifuyo Primary School.
The school headteacher, Amisi Kibira, said the donation by Henry Van Straubenzee will help improve on the academic performance of the pupils at the school.
Most of them have had to travel as many as six kilometres daily to attend classes.
Part of the funds will be used to renovate four classroom blocks at the school.
At the school’s annual PTA meeting, Kibira told parents that they will have to contribute 3,000 each for paying builders and feeding.
Construction is expected to be complete within four months.
The dormitories are to accommodate as many as 1,000 pupils – both girls and boys.
The district education officer, Kaawo Nayi Kawere, said the donation is timely as majority of pupils in the district have been trekking long distances to get to school.
Kawere said now that accommodation for teachers has been provided, there will be no excuses for late arrivals to enable pupils complete their syllabuses in time.
