Bombers, Villa contest for USPA March award

Boxers Kennedy Katende and Ronald Serugo who qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic games with third place playoff wins at the Africa Olympics trials in Yaounde, Cameroon top the list of candidates for the award.

Uganda Sports Press Association members assemble on Monday at the Imperial Royale Hotel not only to plan for this year's annual Nile Special Awards Gala but also to vote for the Sportsman of the month of March.

Boxers Kennedy Katende and Ronald Serugo who qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic games with third place playoff wins at the Africa Olympics trials in Yaounde, Cameroon top the list of candidates for the award.

Katende beat South Africa's Luvuyo Sizani in the heavyweight division while flyweight Serugo beat Lesotho's Moroka Mokotho to qualify for the Olympics.

Phillip Kipyeko whowon a silver medal at the Africa Cross Country Championships in Yaounde Cameroun when he clocked 26 minutes, 36 seconds to finish second in the senior men's 10km race is also in the running for the award alongside Joshua Cheptegei won the 10km Villa De Laredo race in Spain in a time of 27 minutes, 45 seconds. In the process he erased his Personal Best and National Record of 27 minutes, 50 seconds.

Villa who eliminated Zanzibar's JKU 5-0 on aggregate in the CAF Confederations Cup might also be considered.
