“Issuance of certificates that are gradable here and abroad also serves as an advantage for the NHCE as it gives us pride internationally”, he observed.

The deputy executive director for the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Rev. Canon Dr.  Alex Mugisha Kagume has advised tertiary institutions to issue certificates that are transferable, to enable their graduates compete in the international job market.

"Issuance of certificates that are gradable here and abroad also serves as an advantage for the NHCE as it gives us pride internationally", he observed.

He was on Friday awarding certificates and diplomas to 507 students of Young Men's Christians Association (YMCA) Mukono branch,  who completed their courses, at the 25th graduation of the branch.

Kagume advised the graduands to take advantage of the YMCA's outstanding fraternity and work in consultation to excel in whatever they will be doing, instead of competing among themselves.

He also advised them to supplement their new skills with soft ones including compassion, being attentive and accommodative, and expressing good customer care, to be able to match to the existing competition in the job market.

He said, "if you lack the appropriate character, you will lose out and your skills will be laid to waste as more flexible workers will grab the clients from you", he advised.

In his report, YMCA Governing Council Executive Director. Dr. Joseph Jjumba said they have acquired more land to expand Mukono branch curriculum to include agriculture, and to build more structures to meet the growing student  population.

He attributed the growing numbers at the campus to the fact that they endeavour to adjust the curriculum to ensure the right skills are prioritised at any given time.

The branch Director Mukasa Kasajja disclosed that they strictly follow government policy regarding imparting appropriate vocational skills, and prioritizing the girl child education.
