How to get a good internship

A good internship will give you a career head start

Start searching early if you are to land a good internship in a reputable organisation. Business and career coach Joshua Ssenyange says: " While many of organisations have an internship intake between May and July and another one from September to November, you have to go after these opportunities in January for the May session and as early as July for the September session to stand better chances of getting a place."

As you go after your internship, have strong referees on your resume, preferably in your field of study and an extra one or two who are influential in society in general. Such people can get the attention of recruiters and could open up room for interaction with you and interest from the recruiter.

However, it is important to inform these referees when you use them so that in case they are contacted, they can defend you. It is also important to have a good personal relationship with them in order to make it all easier Ssenyange suggests.

During your interviews endeavour to stay looking professional, presentable and confident. Such confidence often rubs off positively on interviewers and often makes them consider you as a good candidate, but ensure you are cautious enough not to appear cocky or arrogant as this often results in the opposite effect
