Records tumble again at second Seals League meet

Silver Fins Academy’s Mercedes Mwebeiha set the pace for the record breaking spree

More records tumbled and new ones were set as more clubs competed in the second Seals League meet swimming competition at Kampala Parents School pool.

Silver Fins Academy's Mercedes Mwebeiha set the pace for the record breaking spree when she clocked 5:31.91 to better Selina Katumba's 400m freestyle record she set at last year's meet by 2.64 seconds.

She went on to beat Seals Club's Ssinzi Nabatanzi's 100m freestyle race record of 1:13.98 in 1:11.93 before improving her personal best in the 50m butterfly with 35.49.

Nabatanzi, on her part set a new 100m backstroke record of 1:22.94 and also improved her 200m backstroke time from 3:04.08 to 2:59.46 and finished second in the 100m freestyle event with an improved time of 1:11.95.

Seals' Anthea Mudanye also set new records in the 50 and 200m breaststroke events.

The Silver Fins also had Zuri Owiny, Anelka Okello and Adam Moussa setting new records in the 50m butterfly in the boys' 8&Under category.

Dolphins Swim Club's Adnan Kabuye was the other star on the day, breaking Mackay Sempa's 100m backstroke record by 20.04 seconds in 1:12.38 and also set new meet records in the 400m, 100 and 50m free, 50m fly, 200m breast and 100m backstroke events.

Ben Kaganda was also in fine form breaking team mate Adnan Kabuye's 100m backstroke time of 1:17.51 in 1:17.41 and also beat Nicholas Malan's 100m freestyle record by 5.91secs and 200m backstroke  held by Seals' Mark Wandera in 2:56.21.

He also beat Gideon Mbowa, Raphael Sine and Christopher Musenze in wiping out Malan's record in the 50m butterfly.

Ten clubs including swimmers from Altona Swim Club, Makerere University, Pirates, Rubaga Girls School, SailFish, Shark Teens competed in the one-day event.

Points are awarded to the top 6 swimmers in each event and awards based on cumulative points over the 4 meets shall be given out to the top swimmers in each age group category at the fourth league meet in December.
