We knew Aine's hideout-Kayihura

“We sent in our team of detectives to try and investigate after we received information that he had sneaked him to Kenya through the Suam area in the Eastern part of the country but investigations proved futile,” Kayihura says

Christopher Aine, the security head of former Prime Minister and Presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi escaped from the country through Kenya, intelligence reports submitted to the head of Uganda Police Force Gen Kale Kayihura indicate.

In an exclusive interview with the New Vision Kayihura confirmed that they had received the tip about Aine alleged escape through Kenya and engaged their colleagues who worked with their Ugandan counterparts but the lead did not provide the much needed information.

"We sent in our team of detectives to try and investigate after we received information that he had sneaked him to Kenya through the Suam area in the Eastern part of the country but investigations proved futile," Kayihura said.

Kayihura however noted that they kept on following different other tips that were provided to them by volunteers and the last one indicated that Aine was hiding in Tanzania in Tanzania.

Kayihura noted that the revelation by Aine that he went into hiding in Tanzania was consistent with the intelligence information they had received. "Recently we received reports that he was hiding in Tanzania," Kayihura said.

He said he had been notified about Aine return on Friday evening through a phone call from General (rtd) Salim Saleh. "General Saleh called me on Friday afternoon and notified me that Aine had handed himself in and had a story to tell.

Kayihura said he was very delighted when he had the news because it would help put to an end all the speculation about Aine especially as regards whether he was dead or alive. "People had claimed that he was in our custody and dead," Kayihura said.

Kayihura said the Aine issue had stressed him and the entire Police force but he was happy to hear Aine testify that he had never arrested as was alleged by some elements.

"I listened to Aine on TV on Thursday night and he clearly said he had never been arrested or detained by any security agency and he says where he has been. That made me glad. He is also very healthy." Kayihura noted

He said refuted reports that Police had deliberately hidden Aine.  "He has evidence and at the right time he will present them to the public to disprove those who are claiming he was lying," Kayihura added.

Kayihura said he had been informed by an aide that Aine had contacted and wanted to surrender. "I was actually trying to contact him myself and it was in the midst of all this that he handed himself to Gen. Saleh,"

He said Aine looked remorseful and could not rule out the fact that he might turned into a state witness.

The IGP noted that even though there were 2 warrants of arrests one by the Jinja court and another from the Ntungamo Court, Aine would continue staying at Saleh's place as they worked out modalities of how his matter would be handled. He denied claims that they were treating Aine in a special way.

"We are working with Gen Saleh. Since he handed himself in we shall write to the Attorney General to find out." The IGP demanded for an apology from all those who had accused him and the Uganda Police Force of Murder.

"All those who were rushing to conclusions using this as propaganda owe me and the entire Uganda Police Force an apology especially Charles Rwomushana and the Go Forward team," Kayihura said. He wondered why they had rushed to conclusions that Aine was dead.

"Now that Aine is here, who should we believe in?  Aine or the speculators who came out with stories that he was dead and even fabricated photographs," Kayihura said. He said he was considering taking those who defamed him and the police to the courts of law if they do not apologise.
