Christopher Aine says he was in Tanzania

Christopher Aine, formerly the head of Amama Mbabazi's security team, who went missing in December last year, has re-resurfaced.

Aine, 33, whose disappearance sparked a controversy during the presidential elections and was feared dead, resurfaced Thursday and appeared in a television news broadcast in company of senior presidential advisor on defence and security Gen. Caleb Akandwanako alias Salim Saleh, who described him as "my son".

In his television interview, Aine said he has been in Tanzania's capital, Dar-es- Salaam, but gave no hints on how he sneaked out of the country on December 14, 2015. He also did not reveal who he has been staying with in Tanzania or what he has been doing.

Notably, he did not mention the name of Amama Mbabazi, but only mentioned ‘my boss' whenever he referred to him.

Gen. Saleh said currently, Aine is in his care and revealed that he was going to help broker mediation between Aine and the Government.

Aine is wanted on assault charges in Jinja and Ntungamo.

In Jinja, he is accused of assaulting Police officers, while in Ntungamo. He is accused of masterminding the beating of National Resistance Movement supporters.

Last week, Civil Division High Court Judge Lydia Mugambe dismissed an application filed by Mbabazi's lawyers that sought to compel the State to produce Aine in court whether ‘dead or alive'.

The judge reasoned that Mbabazi's lawyers, led by John Mary Mugisha, did not adduce evidence showing that Aine is being held in Police custody or any other Police-gazzeted detention centre.

According to court documents, on December 14, 2015 at about 6:00am, Aine was arrested at Kyanja, a city suburb by a group of Police officers travelling in a Police patrol vehicle and white van.

But Aine dismissed these claims, saying he was never arrested by Police.

"The Police did not get the opportunity to arrest me at my residence. They surrounded the premises when I had already left," he said and tendered his apology to Police Chief Kale Kayihura and others, who feared that he had died.

Aine said he came back from Tanzania to rule out allegations that he was dead.

After he went missing, a photo that was alleged to be that of Aine circulated on social media, but Police insisted he was not dead. The Police offered a bounty of sh20m for anyone who would avail information regarding his whereabouts.

On September 11, 2015, Aine was among the Mbabazi security team that clashed with the Police, who had blocked Mbabazi from holding his consultative meetings in Jinja in preparation for his presidential bid.
